What Is Hard Water? The Honest Guide to Calcium, Magnesium & Scale
You’ve probably heard the term “hard water” — but what does it actually mean? And does it matter for your shower?
We’re Zooshen — we make shower filters. What we’ll tell you is the honest version: what hard water is, what it does to your shower, and what you can (and can’t) do about it.
What Is Hard Water?
Hard water is water that contains high levels of dissolved minerals — primarily calcium and magnesium.
As water flows through rocks and soil, it picks up these minerals. The more minerals it picks up, the “harder” it is.
How Hard Water Is Measured
| Hardness Level | Grains per Gallon (GPG) | mg/L (ppm) |
|---|---|---|
| Soft | < 1.0 | < 17.1 |
| Slightly Hard | 1.0–3.5 | 17.1–60 |
| Moderately Hard | 3.5–7.0 | 60–120 |
| Hard | 7.0–10.5 | 120–180 |
| Very Hard | > 10.5 | > 180 |
What Hard Water Does to Your Shower
1. Scale buildup
Calcium and magnesium precipitate out of hot water, leaving white crusty deposits on:
– Shower heads (clogging nozzles)
– Glass doors (water spots)
– Faucets and fixtures
– Tiles and grout
2. Makes soap less effective
Hard water reacts with soap to form “soap scum” — that sticky residue. This means:
– You need more soap to get clean
– Your hair feels “waxy” or coated
– Skin feels tight and dry
3. Makes hair dry and brittle
Mineral deposits build up on your hair cuticle, making it:
– Dry and brittle
– Prone to breakage
– Dull and lifeless
What a Shower Filter Can (and Can’t) Do
What it CAN do:
- Reduce chlorine — KDF-55 or vitamin C media
- Catch sediment — dirt, rust particles
- Reduce the “stripped” feeling — less chlorine means less damage
What it CANNOT do:
- Soften hard water — calcium and magnesium stay
- Remove scale — you need a water softener for that
- Reverse mineral buildup — you need a chelating shampoo for hair
Bottom line: A shower filter reduces chlorine. It does NOT soften hard water.
What to Do About Hard Water
If you have mild hard water:
- Use a chelating shampoo for your hair
- Clean shower head nozzles regularly (vinegar soak)
- Consider a shower filter for chlorine reduction
If you have severe hard water:
- Get a whole-house water softener (ion exchange)
- This is the only way to actually remove calcium and magnesium

Frequently Asked Questions
What is hard water?
Water with high levels of dissolved calcium and magnesium minerals.
Does hard water cause hair loss?
It can make hair dry and brittle, leading to breakage. But true hair loss (follicle damage) is usually caused by other factors.
Does a shower filter soften hard water?
No. A shower filter reduces chlorine. You need a whole-house water softener to remove calcium and magnesium.

The Bottom Line
Hard water is water with high levels of calcium and magnesium. It causes scale buildup, makes soap less effective, and can make hair dry. A shower filter reduces chlorine but does NOT soften hard water.
