The hardware is a one-time cost. The cartridge is the subscription. Over three years, cartridge pricing explains almost the entire difference between the cheapest and most expensive shower filter on the market — so it is worth understanding before you buy the first one.
Quick answer: how long a cartridge really lasts
- Rated in gallons (typically 10,000) is the more honest number — it scales with actual use.
- Rated in months assumes a usage pattern. Six months usually assumes two people, one shower a day each.
- Heavy use shortens life. A family of four showering twice daily can exhaust a 6-month cartridge in three.
- Chlorine smell returning is the practical signal, regardless of the rating on the box.
| Household | Showers per week | Effective life of a 6-month cartridge |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 people | 7–14 | Full 6 months |
| 3 people | 21 | About 4–5 months |
| 4 people | 28–40 | About 3–4 months |
| 5+ people, or high-chlorine supply | 40+ | About 2–3 months |
If your household lands in the bottom two rows, budget for two to three cartridge changes a year rather than two. Buying the annual pack is cheaper than three separate retail purchases.
Annual cost by brand (cartridges only)
| Brand | Cartridge price | Rated interval | Cartridges / year | Cost / year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jolie | $33.00 | 3 months | 4 | $132.00 |
| Aquasana AQ-4100 | $59.99 | 6 months | 2 | $119.98 |
| Culligan WHR-140 | $29.99 | 6 months | 2 | $59.98 |
| Sprite HOC | $24.99 | 6 months | 2 | $49.98 |
| AquaBliss | $12.50 | 6 months | 2 | $25.00 |
| ZOOSHEN | $19.90 | 6 months | 2 | $39.80 |
Prices are published list prices. Subscription programmes typically discount 10–20% but lock you into an interval that may not match your actual usage.
Five signs the cartridge is spent
- The chlorine smell is back. The clearest signal, and the one most people notice first.
- Flow has dropped noticeably. Loaded media restricts the passage as it saturates.
- Water feels different on skin and hair. Tightness and brittleness return.
- It has been longer than the rated interval. Media does not wait for you to notice.
- The housing is visibly discoloured or the media rattles when shaken.
Storage: how to keep spares usable
- Keep cartridges sealed until the day you install them. Activated carbon adsorbs odours from the air around it.
- Store away from solvents, paint, fuel and cleaning chemicals — even sealed, media can pick up vapour.
- Room temperature, dry. Freezing and repeated thawing damages some media structures.
- Do not pre-soak a cartridge “to activate it”. Good cartridges are ready to use; soaking can wash fines into your plumbing.
Counterfeit and grey-market cartridges
Popular filter brands get copied, and a fake cartridge is worse than a tired genuine one: the media may be absent or contaminated. Three checks:
| Check | Authentic | Suspect |
|---|---|---|
| Packaging | Consistent type, batch and date code | Mismatched fonts, no batch code |
| Weight | Noticeably heavier than an empty shell | Light — media may be missing |
| Source | Brand or an authorised retailer | Marketplace listing far below list price |
Should you subscribe or buy packs?
| Model | Upside | Downside |
|---|---|---|
| Subscription | Never forget; usually 10–20% cheaper | Fixed interval ignores your real usage; harder to pause |
| Annual pack | One purchase, one delivery, lower unit cost | You must remember to reorder once a year |
| Buying singles | Maximum flexibility | Highest unit cost; easy to run past the interval |
For most households the annual pack is the best compromise: cheaper per cartridge than singles, without a recurring charge you have to cancel.
